The 7th International Congress on AIDS in Asia Pacific is taking place on 1-5 July 2005 in Kobe, Japan. CWS Indonesia/Timor Leste is represented by Maurice Bloem, Daniel Marcal and Yasmin Kapitan who will post daily coverage of the congress. Together with Joe Thomas-ICHE Australia, CWS Indonesia is facilitating a workshop on Internet Mediated Communication, as well as four presentations, both poster and oral presentations, in the congress.

Day 2 of East Timor National AIDS Commission HIV/AIDS and Capacity Building Workshop

Using the VIPP method, Galuh Wulan facilitated East Timor NAC members on the function of East Timor NAC.

Going into the second day of East Timor National AIDS Commission (NAC) workshop for the 22 NAC members on HIV/AIDS and Capacity Building, the commission members discussed the vision, mission and objective of NAC. NAC members conducted a 2 hour participatory process to voice out their expectations of NAC in East Timor and continued by another 3 hour session on ‘what they want NAC to function as.

At the end of the 5 hours participatory process, 22 NAC members found a common voice to see NAC role in East Timor as:
- policy maker,
- advocate of HIV/AIDS, capacity building organization for constituent working on HIV/AIDS,
- monitoring and evaluation agent of activities conducted by local NGOs’ based on East Timor Government HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan,
- and, as information portal on HIV/AIDS in East Timor.

This afternoon, UN agencies and international organizations with East Timor NAC will meet to share information about the various structure of National AIDS Commission in other countries.

On October 5, 2004, as the newly appointed President of the National AIDS Commission, Daniel Marcal led a meeting at CWS office in East Timor to discuss more on the commission's program as well as building the capacity of its members.

World AIDS Campaign 2004 meeting in East Timor

On October 3, 2004, a meeting between local and international agencies took place in the hall of Ministry of Health of East Timor to organize the World AIDS Campaign 2004 with the focus on "Women, Girls, HIV and AIDS".

New President of National AIDS Committee was introduced

On October 29, 2004, Dr. Rui M. de Arauju introduced the new President of the National AIDS Commission to the local and international agencies present in East Timor.

Rev. Daniel Marcal, a Senior Program Officer of CWS East Timor was appointed as the President of National AIDS Commission of East Timor.

After the appointment, both the President and Vice President of the National AIDS Commission had a meeting with the Minister of Health to discuss about the work of the commission.

On July 28, 2004, 100 church leaders and local leaders in the Liquiça District of Democratic Republic of Timor Leste attended a CWS East Timor HIV/AIDS workshop. This workshop was made possible through a collaborative effort of the Protestant Church in Liquiça District and CWS East Timor. Reverand Francisco de Vasconcelhos representing the IPTL Synode moderated the workshop.

In collaboration with CARITAS and FHI, CWS East Timor conducted a workshop on HIV/AIDS for 30 Catholic Priests and Nuns in Dom Bosco Dili. The purpose of the July 30, 2004 workshop is to raise awareness of faith based leaders on the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
